Moving is no joke!
It first was just an idea…. “What if we consider moving closer to a train?”
This little idea which came about one night during the “Covid Quarantine” slowly spiraled into a life changing decision. The husband used to travel A LOT and when we wasn’t traveling he was commuting about an hour each way into Chicago. He would drive from our house for about 25 minutes to an express train, then take the express train into the city. It wasn’t ideal but it worked. After getting weeks on end with the husband home, it became clear to us that things needed to change.
The market was hot, we decided to take a leap and fast forward from a week to get ready to list and show our house, to a listing that came on a Thursday and multiple offers to sort through by the following Sunday. It was a great whirlwind that we suddenly found ourselves in. Suddenly, I had less than 3 weeks to pack up the house, purge LIKE CRAZY, and decide what stayed with us and what would go into storage for over a year. IT WAS A LOT!!
We found our DREAM lot, bought the house, then made plans to build our own house in place of that one. Talk about taking on more than someone can handle. We did it and we are still living in it.
My point here is this:
1) Moving is serious business. I really am good about purging, and organizing (hence, my current job), but I also was SHOCKED at how much stuff my little family of 4 seemed to have. Sorting through boxes of “childhood memories” both my parents and my in-laws had slowly filtered into our house about made me lose my mind. Do I need my old trophies and knick-knacks? Ummmm… no? Or yes? UGH!! It was a lot.
2) Living with a fraction of your things for over a year really shows you what you actually use versus what just takes up space. I am starting to dread when the moving trucks pull up to our new house with all of our old belongings… I don’t even know how much of it we will keep versus what we will donate now.
3) If there is anyone more qualified to help you move and pack or unpack it is ME! I’m living it now and would love to help anyone going through this exact process. It’s never too much! A little latte goes a long with with the mental health while dealing with all things moving related.
Stay tuned for all updates on the house and our official move-in day later this summer/Fall. (I really hope it am blogging soon saying, “Surprise, we are moving in sooner than expected!" BUT I have a feeling that might not be the case.
ONE CAN DREAM!!
